Mikaela joins us again, and this time she shares about escaping to a lake and then the mountains in nearby states to work remotely from beautiful locations.
Travel Story - 5 months in New Hampshire...in the middle of nowhere...then to Vermont
- She snuck in a trip to Costa Rica
- Had not had a year without a stamp in her passport since age 8
- The New England culture of having a “summer home”
- “Summer Fridays” - no one works on Friday during the summer in Boston (or only works until 1pm)
- Boston was bad with COVID in March 2020, so they went to a family friend’s lake house in New Hampshire
- People in Vermont aren’t happy with out-of-staters buying property and moving to their state
- She loves their condo in Boston and walking everywhere in the city, but right now, that life isn’t possible, so living in Vermont is a much better situation
- If someone had about a week in New England, where should they go?
- Fall: Fly in to Boston & rent a car
- Drive up to New Hampshire
- Stop in Lincoln - White Mountain Nat’l Park
- The colors are beautiful and amazing
- Drive down thru Vermont, starting with St. John’s Berry
- There are breweries that only distribute in the state or close by
- Summer: Fly in to Boston & rent a car
- Fly in mid-week & go straight to Cape Cod (avoid the crowds!)
- Day trip to Nantucket or Martha’s Vineyard
- Take the ferry (you can walk on), but they book quickly on the weekend
- Go up north to Maine because the coast is gorgeous
- Bar harbor (go camping)
- Spend at least one night in Portland (cute walking coastal town)
- 6-hour drive total
- Winter: Fly into Burlington, Vermont (don’t waste your time in Boston)
- A bunch of mountains in Vermont
- East Coast skiing is very different than in the West: it’s ice, not powder
- There are some good mountains in New Hampshire & Maine, but Vermont is the best; all the mountains are within an hour-ish of each other
- Interesting how perceptions of time and how far is too far away to drive differs from place to place
